Breeds fascinate most people. Dogs of a certain breed not only share physical traits, but also behavioural traits, proclivity to certain genetic diseases and also proclivity to certain behavioural problems too. Not only are there strong similarities within breeds, there seem to be similarities in certain categories of breeds. All breeds of scent hounds seem to share traits, while all aboriginal breeds in all parts of the world share certain traits. In this module students will be studying why we see these traits, their origins and purpose. Students will also be learning to anticipate traits in breeds, even if they have not studied the exact breed and to see breed categories in mixed breeds. Students will be carrying out a short breed study, to understand a breed in a lot more detail, that goes far beyond one pagers available in breed books and kennel club websites.
